It’s the month that starts and ends in style. On the very first day of October, it’s an important occasion in our part of the world as it’s, of course, Lincolnshire Day! It's a day to connect with our region and celebrate everything that’s great about our county. Here at Your Local Lincs, that’s something we do every month, and our latest edition is no exception.
In our October edition we visit a local charity known to everyone for the vital, lifesaving work they do across our county and beyond. The yellow helicopters of the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance have become an iconic sight in our local skies, alongside all the fundraising and awareness-raising that so many people do throughout the year.
Talking to the people who run the charity, along with the duty medical crew who were on shift that day (they weren’t there long before they had to set off to another critical emergency), we also chatted to someone on the other side of the service, a former patient. You can find our interview with Ruth in the video below, plus there’ll be much more about the amazing people at LNAA in the Strong Lincs Podcast.
Closer to home, we also visit Sleaford Indoor Market. Have you popped in there yet? It’s becoming a valuable addition to our high street, with a growing community of independent traders selling their unique products. Lee Taylor, who set up the market, is looking to expand the range of retailers and has a special offer for new traders this month!
We’ve been cooking up some great competitions, with a baking set on offer to celebrate National Baking Week, which takes place mid-October. We’ve also got tickets to see Graham Gouldman, founder member of 70s rockers 10cc, perform at the Drill Hall in Lincoln.
We’ve also cooked up a delicious recipe for spicy pumpkin soup, perfect for keeping you warm as the chilly autumn days creep in. With a new season here, Laura from The Wright Words wants us to forget about New Year as the only time to set resolutions and explains why this time of year can be perfect for a fresh start.
Recently, we’ve been spoilt with all the great events happening locally, and they keep on coming this month. The Market Place will become another centre of community activity with Sleaford Pumpkin Fest on the 24th. That same day, over at Great Hale Church, there’s a concert of classical music featuring some wonderfully talented performers. The Lincolnshire Woodturners are also back with their Annual Open Day and Craft Fair at Leasingham Village Hall.
And don’t forget the big one… and we know it’s going to be big after all the generous donations we received for it! On 3rd October, the Jigsaw Sale will be taking place at Quarrington Church to raise money for St Barnabas Hospice. After collecting over 400 jigsaws for the event, we’re looking forward to seeing just how many people come along to find themselves a new puzzle, all while supporting a great local cause.

So, we’ve talked about how October begins, but what about how it ends? The 31st is, of course, the time to dress up in spooky costumes for Halloween, and as it’s the season for ghosts and monsters, we’ve been looking into a chilling folk tale involving a werewolf, something that happened just down the road from us, so we’re still keeping it local!
Whether we’re championing local causes, discovering independent businesses or delving into local folklore, at Your Local Lincs we’re always looking for the stories and people that make our area special.
